Ghousia College of Engineering
(GCE) was started in the year 1980. Ali Janab Haji
Nabi Sheriff Saheb started the college in the name
of his father Ali Janab Mohammed Ghouse. It is
Owned and Managed by Ghousia Industrial &
Engineering Trust (GIET), Bangalore. The College
is approved by All India Council for Technical (AICTE),
New Delhi, and is affiliated to Visveswariah
Technological University (VTU) Belgaum. 2004-2005
is the Silver Jubilee Year of our College.
During the last 25 years, GCE
has developed very well and has been recognized as
one of the good Engineering Colleges in Karnataka
State. The College has well qualified, experienced
and dedicated faculty and supporting staff, state
of the art laboratory and workshop facilities,
Computer facilities, Library and Information
Center, outdoor and indoor games, multi-gym, air
conditioned seminar hall and open air Amphi
Theatre, round the clock Internet facilities &
separate hostels for Boys and Girls.
The College offers courses
leading to BE Degree in six disciplines, M.Tech.,
courses in Manufacturing Science Engineering and
Power System Engineering, Research Courses leading
to M.Sc., Engg., PhD degree in Mechanical
Engineering and Electrical and Electronics
Engineering. Five of the disciplines are
accredited by National Board of Accreditation
(NBA) New Delhi.
The College bagged two ranks, I
& III rank in M.Tech., Manufacturing Science
& Engineering during February 2006
examination.
During the last 25 years about
8000 students have graduated in various
disciplines of engineering from our college. Many
of our College Alumni are holding very high
positions in a number of well known organizations,
not only in our country but also in a number of
foreign countries.
The College has a full-fledged placement and
Training Centre. This Centre organizes several
training programmes related to development of soft
skills to our college students. The Placement and
Training Centre has enabled our college students
to participate in several recruitment programme of
several leading organizations.
The college provides facilities to students to
take part in co-curricuar and extra curricular
activities. The college has an active National
Service Scheme (NSS) unit which organizes several
programmes related to social service. The College
also has an Environment Cell, Entrepreneurship
Development Cell and ISTE Staff and Students
Chapter. Students are encouraged to participate in
inter collegiate competitions in outdoor / indoor
sports / games, cultural events and technical
paper presentation competitions. The College also
organizes several Inter collegiate Sports
tournaments and technical paper presentation
competitions. Many of our college students have
represented VTU in various sports and games.
GHOUSIANA is the annual cultural festival
organized every year to bring out and exhibit the
talents of our students.
The College encourages faculty
members to acquire higher degrees, to publish text
books and participate in
Seminar/Workshop/Conferences that are held not
only within our country but also held abroad.
From the HOD's Desk
I am very happy to present the department newsletter. The department has maintained the continuity of bringing out the newsletter. During the last six months there have been quite a good number of activities. A national Level Students Paper Presentation Contest “SILCON-CIV05”, Silver Jubilee Year Technical Lectures, Observance of My Department Day etc., besides faculty publications and participation in several seminars and workshops are a few of them. Apart from these, all the regular works have been carried forward.
Activities
“SILCON – CIV 05” National Level Technical Papers Contest
The Department organized a National Level Students Technical Paper Contest “SILCON – CIV 05” on 19-05-05. The organizing committee consisted of Dr. A. Ramachandra, Principal as Chairman Dr. Md. Ilyas Anjum, Prof. & HOD, as convenor, Mr, G.S. Munawar Pasha and Mr. Khalid Nayaz Khan as the co-ordinators. Dr. H.N. Ramesh Faculty of Civil Engineering UVCE Banagalore and Dr. Subhash C. Yaragal, Faculty of Civil Engineering, NIT Surathkal were the external judges for the event. Dr. Krishnamurthy, Prof. and Chairman, Faculty of Civil Engineering, UVCE Bangalore was the chief guest in the inaugural function. There were twenty-three papers in the event from thirteen different institutions. The papers were presented in four sessions. Cash awards of Rs. 1000/-, Rs. 750/- and Rs. 500/- were respectively awarded to the following three best papers selected by the judges. |

* Third best paper - BVB, Hubli

Builders Association of India at the Department
1. The Civil Engineering Association organized a visit of the following officials from Builders Association of India on 13-04-05 who addressed the students on the respective topic. a. Mr. Muralidhara, Builder, on ‘Scope of Civil Engineering'.
b. Mr. J. Amalan, Joint Director, Apex Institute Building, Govt. of India on ‘Aptitude and Personality'
c. Mr. K.L Mohan Rao, Chairman BAI, Bangalore on 'Importance of Training for Fresh Civil Engineers'.
Silver Jubilee Year Lecture Series
The Civil Engineering Association organized the following two expert lectures under this Series.
1. ‘Concrete- Past, Present and Future, on 27.04.05 by Dr. C.S Vishwanatha, Chief Engineer, Torsteel Research Foundation in India. The talk focused on historical development of Concrete, its ingredients and what could be the futuristic trends. It was informed that concrete was started as a mixture of four ingredients i.e., cement, coarse and fine aggregates, water and later on increased to five ingredients, one extra being the admixture for enhancing the special property. Later on six ingredients were preferred with one more extra being the superplastisizer. He also touched upon topics such as Lunar concrete, Mobile concreting, Multistorey tall structures, 1.5 and 2 KM span bridges at Japan and Re-habilitaion of structures.
2. “Some Advances in Geotechnical Engineering” by Dr. K.S. Subba Rao, Professor Emeritus, IISc Bangalore on 09.06.2005. The talk focused on: 1. Historical Development of Geo-Technical Engg., 2.Problems associated with Geo-Technical Engg.,with reference to: (a)Shear Strength (b)Soil Sampling & Testing 3. Environmental Geo-Technical Engg., 4. Applications to: Earth Dams, Retaining Walls Soil Nailing 5. Strutted Excavations 6. Pile foundations 7. Challenges ahead. The contributions of Coulomb, Rankine, Terzaghi, Taylor, Skempton, Meyerhof, Bishop, Peck, Bjerrum, Roscoe, Brinch etc., in the field of geotechnical engineering were presented. |
“My Department Day “
The Civil Engineering Department has been observing “My Department Day” for the past three years. The objective is to instill amongst the civil engineering students the feeling of their belongingness to the department and uphold the dignity and reputation of not only the department but also the institution. They are encouraged to contribute through some useful work to the department.
This year it was celebrated on 25 th May . The programme started with an Inaugural Address by Dr. Mohamed Ilyas Anjum , Prof. & HOD wherein the objectives and significance of the day were highlighted. Mr. Yasir Beg of fourth semester made a power point presentation about the Profile of the Department . This was followed by Technical Paper Presentations by Mr. Aditya. S and Mr. Md. Ghulam Moinuddin of eighth and fourth semester respectively on the topics related to Smart Structures and Use of Fly Ash . Mr. Anns Imtiaz of sixth semester presented a collection of Quotes while Mr. Panish M.V offered a CD of Ansys software 7.1 version . The sixth semester students carried out Stock Verification of Department Library while fourth semester students carried out Computer Systems Maintenance. There was an entertainment session too. There were two presentations on “ Communication Skills and Effective Expressions” and “Some Hints for Effective Communication ” respectively by Invited Speakers Sri Tallam Venkatesh and Sri Prabhakara , two noted and popular Trainers in the area of Personality Development . This part of the programme was jointly organised by the department and Lions Club of Ramanagaram . A Fare Well Party to the outgoing eighth semester students was also held. The students expressed their pride to be a part of the department and the institution.

- Mr. G.N. Nagaraja, SG Lect. attended a one-week Quality Improvement Programme on “ Applied Engineering Geology in Civil and Mining Engineering” during 30 th may to 3 rd June 2005 at IIT Bombay.
- Mr. N.S. Kumar, Asst. Prof. Attended the one day seminar on ‘Advances in Civil
Engineering' on 11 th June 2005 at UVCE, Bangalore.
- Mr. Khalid Nayaz Khan Asst. Prof. & Mr. E. Ramesh Babu SG Lect. attended a One Day seminar on “ Launch of STRAP 11.5” on 24-03-05.
- Prof. Md. Ilyas Anjum, H.O.D. and N.S. Kumar Asst. Prof. attended the International Conference “START 05” at IIT, Kharagpur and presented their technical papers during 3-5 th Jan 05.
- Prof. Md. Ilyas Anjum, H.O.D attended the 65 th annual session of IRC at Bangalore during 8 – 11 Jan –05.
Appointments Prof. Md. Ilyas Anjum, H.O.D was appointed as Vice Principal of the college. He was also appointed as member, Board of Examinations (UG) of Bangalore University KSCST Project
The 8 th Semester students' project “ Determination of Aggregate flakiness and elongation indices using New Universal Gauge” was approved by KSCST and received a grant of Rs. 5500 /-. The project was guided by Dr. Md. Ilyas Anjum, Prof. & HOD. |

Dr.Md. Ilyas Anjum, Prof. & H.O.D presented a technical paper on “Role of Aggregate Combined Index and Gradation in Bituminous Mixes” in the international conference START 2005 at IIT Kharagpur during 3 rd - 5 th Jan. 2005.
Dr.Md. Ilyas Anjum, Prof. & H.O.D presented a technical paper on “Effects of Coarse Aggregates Shape Factors on Properties of Bituminous Mixes for Road Pavements” in the 65 th Annual Session of IRC held at Bangalore during 10 th Jan. 2005 . Mr. N.S Kumar, Asst. Prof. presented a technical paper on “ Vehicle – Bridge Interaction Under Dynamic Loading” in the international conference START 2005 at IIT Kharagpur during 3 rd - 5 th Jan. 2005.

Mr.Ferasat Hussain and Mr. Naveed Ahmed of 8 th semester presented a paper on “ Determination of Aggregate Shape Factors Using the New Instrument” in the National Level Students Technical Paper Contest “SILCON – CIV 05” at Ghousia College of Engineering on 19 th May 2005.
Proposed Programmes
- A course in spoken English for the administrative and supporting staff of the college during August 2005, in association with the Placement and Training Centre.
- Technical meet of practicing civil engineers and contractors of the four surrounding taluks.
- Mr. M.T Prathap Kumar, Asst. Prof. is scheduled to visit INDONESIA to present his research paper on “ Soil Liquefaction and Evaluation of Hazards Associated with it-A Review with respect to Past Earthquakes“ in the Third International Conference on Geotechnical Engineering during August 2005.

Expert Lectures Delivered
Mr. N.S. Kumar, Asst. Prof. delivered an invited lecture on “Dynamics of Slant Legged Skew Bridges” in one day seminar ACE 2005 on ‘Advances in Civil Engineering' on 11 th June 2005 at UVCE, Bangalore.
Ph.D. awarded
Prof. Md. Ilyas Anjum, Prof & HOD was awarded Ph.D. degree from Bangalore university on 18-02-05 for his thesis entitled “Effects of Aggregate Shape Factors on Properties of Bituminous Mixes for Road Pavements”. |
